Hello fellow fashion lovers, as you know the Arise African Fashion Week kicked off this week and it has been going great with lots of creative ideas and inspirations for your wardrobes!

I think they are absolutely fabulous! I love Christie Brown's take, very girly and very me! I also love Heni's stuff, the fact that you see a bit of goth and elegance in his representation of femininity!

All in all, very impressive...Africa is going places!

AFRICAN FASHION WEEK 2009

The 2009 African Fashion week kick starts tomorrow 12th June in Jo'burg, SA.

According to Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, the chairperson of African Fashion International, the host of the show, their mission is to take African fashion to the world and in fulfilling this mandate, they are actively doing their part in contributing to the realisation of the African Renaissance.

With a long list of fashion designers originating from Africa and with 7 days of models sashaying on the catwalks unveiling the fabulous creations, this is going to be the IT show!

DRESS MADNESS 2009!

There is a new craze in town and it is all about the "Dress"!

Started Stateside by 3 lovely beauties by the names of Jangar McGill, Randi Elisabeth and Liz Oton, the idea is to celebrate femininity and to discover "the dress" with a commitment to wear a dress at least 4 out of 7 days during the months of June, July and August.

KIRETTE COUTURE HOSTS IN MANCHESTER & NYC

Two cities, same brand, one aim, which was to put on a quality show that was totally unique in their genre.
KiRette Couture, a Cameroonian-led fashion label fronted by Kibonen Nfi and Anrette Ngafor threw a unique fashion show respectively in New York's trendy Manhattan suburbs and Manchester's quirky and uber cool Northern quarter.

The show in Manchester took place on the 30th of May and saw a collaboration between KC and GTE styling fronted by George Tyrone Eko. The gallery style show was a hit with those who attended and the favourite dress of the night voted for by the crowd was the blue bubble dress.

At the Boucarou Lounge on June 6th in New York, KC collaborated with Living Measure, a charity that campaigns against youth sexploitation, to produce a show which was not only informative but also helped to raise close to USD3,000!

“It was a very enriching and entertaining night. The runway show was very vibrant and totally told our story” said KC’s US director, Kibonen Nfi.

I AM ALEK WEK

Name: Alek Wek
D.O.B: 16th April 1977
Country: Sudan

Alek (which means Black Spotted Cow) Wek a native of the Dinka tribe, was born in Wau in Southern Sudan and first appeared on the catwalks at the age of 19 in 1995.

She was the 7th of 9 children born to the Wek family and although the exact date of her birth is unknown, her mother chose the 16th April because it is the rainy season and was the period in which Alek was born.

Her and her family fled to the UK in 1991 to escape the civil war which erupted between the Muslim north and the Christian south.

Alek was discovered at an outdoor market in Crystal Palace, South London in 1995 by a Models 1 scout and she went on to receive much attention when she appeared in the music video for “Golden Eye” by Tina Turner where she then catapulted into the fashion world as one of its top models.

She signed unto Ford Models in 1996, appeared in another music video “Got til it’s Gone” by Janet Jackson and was named the “Model of the year” in 1997 by MTV.

Alek has appeared on many catwalk shows and fashion weeks and has done adverts for Issey Miyake, Moschino, Victoria’s Secret, Clinique as well as a photographic shoot for Herb Ritts covered in Joanne Gair body painting.

She now counts the US as her main country of residence.
