AFRICA FASHION WEEK 2010 PART 1

All eyes are currently fixated on South Africa as we know but it is not just about the 2010 Fifa World Cup footbal tournament, it is also about fashion, yes fashion!

The Africa Fashion Week kicked off in style at the Sandton Convention Center in Jo’burg yesterday and so far the collections have been diverse, from the fabrics on display to the inspiration and imagery of the designers. They are full of character, funky edged and unique.

Deola opened yesterday’s show with a very sexy collection and on display was a mixture of fabrics including lace, strong and sultry silhouettes with emphasis on the shoulders as well as pleats in different forms and styles and layers. Most pieces were amazing and some were ok but all in all, kudos to Ms Sagoe for leading the pack.

Also on show was Sakina M’sa, Xuly Bet, Soucha who all carried a very dark theme with their use of black fabric, sporting and playful images.

My favourite collection so far is Ituen Basi, her fusion of different Ankara prints, her wearable and very trendy and current styles makes her pieces elegant and fabulous. The colours are very uplifting! For your spring summer 2010 look, I say go Ituen Basi!!

ITUEN BASI

The Ituen Basi brand is a celebration of individuality and feminism, a stylish combination of timeless elegance with a contemporary twist. Ituen has forged a subtle yet distinct signature inspired by couturiers of old as well as her many years of experience in the fashion industry. The brand is synonymous with the tradition of the finest quality infused with unquestionable creativity. Her spectacular presentation is often seen as the result of fusing experiences.

Ituen Basi completed a BA Theatre Arts degree at the University of Ife in Nigeria where she also designed and tailored costumes and garments for stage productions and beauty pageants. Following her time at university, Ituen deepened her knowledge and formalized her experience in the fashion industry by studying at the acclaimed London College of Fashion Ituen’s education and experience have helped her develop a blend of exceptional skills in design development, pattern engineering and bespoke tailoring. Her unique approach produces exceptional but wearable art pieces which are contemporary expressions of enduring sophistication. Her message remains consistent across each exclusive collection–“its in the detail”.

Apart from designing and producing garments under her label, Ituen also runs a garment manufacturing unit which produces ‘small runs’ for independent designers, micro fashion businesses based both in Nigeria and the UK.
